Douglas was the African Champion of Public Speaking for 2001/2002 . And he was only 22 at the time! In 2001, competing against people with up to 30 years more life experience than him, Douglas proved his mettle against the 8 nations comprising Southern Africa . He then went on to win 2 nd place in the recent Toastmasters International World Championships of Public Speaking, Los Angeles , California.
 
He is the youngest person ever to have represented Southern Africa in this competition. Then in 2002, he demonstrated his professionalism-under-pressure by winning the Southern African Championships for Impromptu Speaking. So confident was Clem Sunter (Chairman, Anglo American Chairman's Fund) of Douglas's abilities, that he granted a sponsorship of living expenses to help Douglas during his World Championships effort in America (August 2001).
 
Douglas received further sponsorship from Cresta Shopping Center and Pierre Cardin outfitters SA.  In August of 2004, Douglas went on to even greater heights by placing second in the World Championships of Public Speaking (as opposed to the "International" event, this one is primarily a USA-dominated event). No African has ever done so well!
 
He has worked as a narrator for Tape Aids for the Blind, Hosted a show on Horizon Stereo, and facilitated Public Speaking and Leadership Training Courses for the Commercial Voice Training (CVT) Academy in Rivonia, using his own material. With a pleasant rapport, a great sense of humour, and an entertaining style, Doug has a knack for capturing audiences, and driving messages home.
